On-line Forty-Niner

Alena KovalchukUniversity of Central Florida traveled to The Beach Friday and ended Long Beach State’s six-match winning streak.

The Golden Knights defeated the 49er women’s tennis team 4-3 Friday afternoon at the 49er Campus Courts.

LBSU started the day off well in singles action as Alena Kovalchuk defeated UCF’s Anna Westin 6-2, 1-0 in a match that Westin was forced to retire.

Unfortunately for The Beach Kovalchuk’s victory would not carry over as the 49ers lost in the No.2, No.3 and No.4 singles matches.

UCF’s Julie Pecastaing defeated Laura Thomas in the No.2 singles match 6-4, 6-1. While Lindsey Marvel dropped her No.3 match to Kristina Lohmos 6-1, 7-6 (6). In the No.4 match Kelly Chan could not keep up with UCF’s Pamela Fernandez as she took their match 6-3, 6-4.

Long Beach clawed back into the match as both No.5 singles’ Alanah Carrol and No.6 singles’ Claudia Argumedo won their matches.

Carroll defeated Ola Luczak 7-6 (5), 7-5 in a hard fought battle as Argumedo took her match from Amira Samara 6-0, 6-1.

Having split the singles matches three apiece the event would be decided in doubles matches.

LBSU struck first, winning the No.1 doubles match. In the match Kovalchuk and Marvel easily dispatched the Golden Knights’ Pecastaing and Samara 8-1.

The 49ers would be unable to capitalize as the team went on to lose both remaining doubles matches.

Thomas and Argumedo dropped their match 8-6 to the tandem of Fernandez and Luczak. In the final doubles match Chan and Carroll lost a hard contested match to Lohmos and Marieke Gunawan 9-8 (4).

Long Beach had won six straight matches prior to Friday. Wednesday afternoon the 49ers trounced Rice University 7-0 at the 49er Campus Courts.

The Beach was set to host Penn State University Saturday at noon, but that match was called due to rain. Head Coach Jennifer Hilt said that the match would not be made up at a later date.

Long Beach State returns to action March 21 against University Texas El Paso.
