Shawn EldridgeThe 49ers demolished the Michigan Wolverines 11-5 Tuesday. The win ties the longest win streak the women’s water polo team has ever had at five. The No. 4-ranked 49er team betters its record to 8-1.

In the opening period, Michigan tied the game at 1-1 with the first of two goals by Julie Nisbet with 4:33 left. Garcia tallied back-to-back goals at 3:41 and 2:35 in the first period to put Long Beach State up 3-1.

The 49ers jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first period led by junior Angelica Garcia who tallied four goals and Cassie Azevedo who added three.

“We had MVPs all across each quarter,” Head Coach Rick Azevedo said. “One quarter it could be Angelica, and the next could be Cassie.”

Sophomore Roberta Stewart’s goal with 6:21 left in the third made it 7-3. Michigan’s Rachel Burkons tried to keep up with the 49ers, with her goal at 2:56, but the Wolverines would get no closer.

Goalie Bri Hawkins tallied nine saves for The Beach, while Wolverine’s goalie Betsey Armstrong had eight.

“Everybody improved this game we were setting up things really well,” Azevedo said. “Cassie played very well, and we had an unbelievable performance from Angelica.”

If there is one improvement the 49ers have to make, Stewart, the team’s utility said that it is polishing only minor tactics in the water.

“We’re working on controlling our game,” Stewart said. “Right now we have reached a peak, and [we are] working on fixing the little mistakes.”

Azevedo said that the team is stronger than its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation competition.

“We know we are better than some of the MPSF teams like Cal and San Diego State.” Azevedo said. “We’re ready, let’s bring it.”

As far as competition, Stewart said that the team will step up to the upcoming competition.

“We’re definitely warming up and getting stronger,” Stewart said.

The 49ers will return to the campus pool at 4 p.m. Friday when they host Pacific and compete at noon on Saturday against USC.
