The Long Beach State Women’s tennis team already has more losses this year than they did all of last year when they went 21-3 under six-year Head Coach Jennifer Hilt.  Junior Lindsay Marvel put a stop to the losing streak as she led the defending Big West Champions to their first two victories of the season.

The 49ers beat both the University of Idaho and the University of Hawaii in Moscow, Idaho this past weekend to improve their record to 2-4.

Marvel performed like the standout player coach Jennifer Hilt has billed her to beas she beat Vida Senci of the University of Idaho 7-5, 6-0 in singles competition to record the 49ers’ first victory of the season. In the second match Marvel also led her team to victory in singles and doubles competition with the help of freshman Megan Biorkman and junior Kelly Chan.

Sophomore Claudia Argumedo won her match against the University of Idaho by beating Monica Martin 6-0, 6-2 in two sets. Freshman Alanah Carroll contributed to the win with a victory over Larissa Nicoll 6-3, 6-2. And junior Kelly Chan beat Karen Konishi 6-3, 6-2.

Chan and Carroll teamed up in doubles competition to defeat Martin and Sunel Nieuwoudt of Idaho 9-7. Marvel and Argumedo (LBSU) also won their doubles match against Banks and Konishi (Idaho) 8-5.

The tennis team was not done there. They won their second match of the season by defeating the University of Hawaii in Moscow on Sunday. In this game the 49ers won five of six singles matches and swept all three doubles matches to improve their record to 2-4.

Sophomore Laura Thomas led the way with an impressive 6-2, 6-2 win over Lauren Fitzgerald of Hawaii. Lindsey Marvel added to the victory by defeating Stacy Hakikawa 6-3, 6-3 in her singles match. Freshman Megan Biorkan won her second consecutive match in three sets 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 with a win over Polina Kravert. Kelly Chan and Alanah Carroll also earned singles wins against Hawaii.

In doubles, the 49ers won all three matches for the first time all season.  Thomas and Boirkman won 8-1 over Hakikawa and Justine Boutet. Chan and Carroll defeated Fukushima and Kravets 8-6 in their match. Marvel and Claudia Argumedo won 8-5 over Fitzgerald and Mainor  in the last match of the game to complete the sweep.

Long Beach State hopes to carry its momentum into this Saturday’s match against Cal State Northridge at the 49er Campus Courts.
