The
Long Beach State women’s tennis team opened
the season with a 0-3 record after losing
their home opener to Sacramento State 4-3
Saturday.
“We
should have won that match,” Head Coach
Jennifer Hilt said. “[At one point] we had
a 5-1 lead which we blew.”
Lindsey Marvel and Claudia Argumedo led
The Beach in the singles matches defeating
Sacramento State’s Roberta Fessenko 4-6,
7-5, 7-6 (2) and Amanda Sanches 6-1 and
6-0. Long Beach State’s Alanah Carroll was
also successful in defeating Cristina Rivieccio
6-3, 6-4.
The
deciding factor in the loss was in the No.
3 match between Megan Biorkman of Long Beach
State and Ann Roslund of Sacramento.
Roslund came from behind in the third set
defeating Biorkman 7-5 giving Sacramento
State the 4-3 victory.
“We
are young. With each match we are learning,”
Hilt said.
The
team is young with no seniors on the roster,
four juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen.
Hilt said the team has suffered losses after
key players have gone on to pursue other
things.
“We had a pair of sisters that left the
team to try and make it on the professional
tour,” Hilt said.
The Beach will face its first conference
match on the road Friday at Idaho.
The
team will also face Washington State and
Hawaii before returning home next week to
face Cal State Northridge. |
