Cory LoeblCory Loebl and Stephanie Sampson led the way as Long Beach State track and field put together a strong showing at the Big West Championship meet over the weekend

Both Loebl and Sampson won Big West Championship titles. Loebl carried his season-long success into the championship meet as he won the discus event with a throw of 183 feet 9 inches to attain his first ever Big West title.

Not to be outdone, Sampson came through in the hammer throw as she outdistanced the competition with a throw of 177 feet 3 inches to also win her first career Big West title.

It was an all around spectacular meet for Loebl, a team captain, who finished with all-conference honors in the discus, hammer throw and shot put events. After winning the discus Friday Loebl returned to the track Saturday and recorded two second place finishes in the hammer throw and shot put events.

Loebl recorded a toss of 196 feet 2 inches in the hammer throw but was outdone by Utah State’s Ryan Bruhn, who finished in first place with a throw of 199 feet 4 inches. Utah State got the best of Loebl again in the shot put event as Josh Sides placed first with a toss of 59 feet 10.25 inches, eclipsing Loebl’s second place toss of 54 feet 2.75 inches.

A strong fifth place showing in the javelin competition with a longest attempt of 189 feet 0 inches rounded out Loebl’s weekend.

Loebl’s accomplishments this season and at the meet also garnered the senior the  Big West Conference Athlete of the Year award.

Joining Sampson and Loebl as all-conference honorees were several other 49er athletes.

Jennifer Yadon finished the 3,000 meter steeplechase event in second place with a time of 10 minutes 37.18 seconds to secure her all-conference honors. Terrence Wroblewski finished third in the men’s 10,000 meter run with a time of 31 minutes 34.52 seconds to achieve all-conference honors as well.

Senior Frank Rodriguez joined his teammates as an all-conference honoree as he placed third in the javelin competition with a throw of 202 feet 2 inches.

Also garnering all-conference accolades were Gladys Iwuaba and Adrian Ruark.

Iwuaba finished in third place in the triple jump competition with a score12.45 meters. The senior missed a second conference honor in the long jump as she recorded a long of 5.67 meters but finished fourth behind Cortney Strafford of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, who recorded a jump of 5.73 meters to finish in third place.

Rurark was named all-conference for his effort in the pole vault competition. Ruaurk finished third behind Giovanni Lannaro [17 feet 8.5 inches] of Cal State Fullerton and John Takahashi [17 feet 4.5 inches] of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, with a vault of 16 feet 4.75 inches.

As a team the 49ers finished in the middle of the field. The women’s team finished sixth in a field of nine teams with an overall score of 64, while the men only fared marginally better as they finished fifth in the field of nine teams with a total score of 81.

The 49ers will return to competition this weekend at the NCAA Regionals at Stanford then travel to Sacramento for the NCAA Championships starting June 11
