Soldiers deserve our support
I
wanted to thank Sarah Thigpen for a wonderful
and much-needed article that put a human
face to a growing problem (“Protestors should
respect all people”). I would honestly like
to know whether the protestors realize that
our military is fighting for all our freedoms,
whether it is to support our administration
or oppose it.
Men and women are ripped away from their
families and are dying for your freedom
— your freedom to get an education and go
to parties and protest war all back here
in the comfort of the states. They are proudly
doing this for everyone, not just people
who agree with the administration’s view.
Do you think anyone in the military was
sitting in that room when the administration
was making the preparations for war, besides
the top brass? They are not murderers; they
are bravely doing their job no matter what
their reasons for joining the military.
It is interesting how in the same issue
Nina Flores states “The same goes for the
idea that anti-war protestors don’t support
the troops — of course they support the
troops — they just want to bring them home
alive.”
Well, I can’t say that I think that the
protestor who yelled out “Murderer!” at
one of our ROTC students is very concerned
with his welfare. The protestors are not
speaking with one voice, and they are contradicting
each other.
Whatever your political views, and I have
purposely kept mine out of this letter,
never forget the countless brave Americans
who have made the ultimate sacrifice over
the past two centuries. Respect them and
thank them, their suffering gives us the
freedom to sit here and take political pot
shots at each other in our school newspaper.
If we had been taken over by Nazi Germany
50 years ago, I’m not sure they would be
so obliging.
