‘Forty
Diners’ impact vendors
Cal State Long Beach master in nursing and
master in public health graduate students
have initiated an advocacy campaign entitled
“Healthy Forty Diners.’
The goal of this campaign is to have Forty
Diners vendors post or handout, upon consumer
request, nutritional content of the food
there are selling. Why should you be concerned
about what you eat?
Recent research shows that poor diet and
physical inactivity claim an estimated 300,000
American lives every year. Together they
are the number two cause of death in the
United States.
Chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes,
coronary heart disease and high cholesterol
are linked to obesity, poor diet and inactivity.
To add insult to injury, in 1970 Americans
spend $6 billion on fast food, and in 2000
we spent $100 billion! The amount spent
is greater than what was spent on higher
education, personal computers or new cars!
CSULB Students Poll
In a recent poll of 192 students, 66 percent
ate meals on campus, 48 percent ate one
to five meals per week at Forty-Niner shops,
and 84 percent would look at nutritional
analysis before they ordered food.
A whooping 78 percent of the students polled
stated they would change their order based
on the nutritional analysis.

Since the beginning of our advocacy campaign
we have collected data on the Forty-Niner
vendors who post nutritional information
and those who have not.
We have utilized various advocacy methods
to ensure that Forty-Niner vendors understand
the importance of our mission to promote
healthier food choices on campus.
We have succeeded in motivating most of
the Forty-Niner vendors to post nutritional
information, but there are still a number
of vendors who are dragging their feet.
How can you help? Join us in our advocacy
campaign by requesting to see the nutritional
information prior to ordering and paying
for your food.
One single request per student can make
those vendors who are dragging their feet
feel the heat and motivate them to post
nutritional information or possibly lose
valuable informed customers such as yourself.
The choice is yours.
