Lake Havasu still a hot spot

By Amy Cucinella

Lake Havasu, located on the Colorado River in Arizona, is always a top destination choice for college students. The Travelchannel.com Web site ranks it as the No. 3 best Spring Break destination.

In many ways, Lake Havasu has formed the modern college student’s conception of what Spring Break vacations should entail — thousands of partying college students, pristine coastlines, every type of possible boating and water activity, and a plentitude of outdoor adventure possibilities such as hiking, rock climbing,  parasailing and horseback riding.

Cal State Long Beach students will not find it necessary to fly as it is only a four and a half hour drive from Long Beach, making Havasu an economical spring break vacation.

Lake Havasu offers a variety of accommodation options.  If a large group of 15 to 20 people are going, consider renting a houseboat for several nights which will allow your group to party, sleep and have water fun all in one place.  House boats rent out quickly during Spring Break and it is recommended that reservations are made as soon as possible.  A house boat rental will cost each person between $60 and $90 a day, comparable to a hotel room.  Nautical Sports Center still has a few house boats left to rent during CSULB’s Spring Break and reservations can be made by calling (928) 855-7000.

Camping is another great option for Havasu vacationers as it usually does not cost more than $20 a night for a site.  Lake Havasu State Park campsites provide boat launch ramps, a walking trail, a garden, beautiful beaches, restrooms and shower facilities, and is located near the famous London Bridge, which is an original bridge purchased from London and reconstructed in the city in 1971.  The London Bridge area is also a popular location for nightlife in the city.  Camping reservations are recommended, especially during Spring Break season and can be made for Lake Havasu State Park campsites by calling (928) 855-2784.  There are also several other campsites, and information on them can be found at www.lakehavasu.com.

Those wishing to have a more typical vacation can always stay in one of the dozen hotels in the city.  The London Bridge Resort is the only waterfront all-suite condominium resort in the city and provides five-star accommodations set on 110 waterfront acres, but it also will cost around $250 per night.

The Extra Holidays Havasu Dunes are a good choice for those looking to save money and range from $74 to $135 per night.  It is located near the lake, has three pools and hot tubs, clubhouse activities and a gym.  Each room has a full kitchenette, microwave and a television and VCR. There are many other hotels to choose from although the best location is on the Island or by the English Village because you will be with in walking distance to all of the on-land action.

For more information on planning a trip to Lake Havasu check out www.lakehavasuparty.com or call the city’s tourism bureau at (520) 453-3444.
