Engineering
students will get a chance to look for finding
full-time jobs and internships at the Engineering,
Science and Technology Job Fair today from
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the University Student
Union.
“Many students do not prepare for job fairs.
They have to impress upon employers that
they are unique candidates, and be able
to ask specific questions about the company
as an educated person, not just show up
and ask representatives what the company
is,” said Robert Wendt, career counselor
at Career Development Center.
According to Wendt, more than 20 companies
will be looking for potential employees
in the fields of engineering and science.
The companies include the City of Los Angeles,
Department of Water and Power, NAVAIR, Raytheon
Company, and TRW - Space & Electronics.
The Career Development Center had a workshop
for preparing to get the most out of the
job fair yesterday. The speaker, Angi Carrillo
Humphreys, business counselor suggested
that before the job fair, students should
identify companies that may be participating,
research and develop questions to ask company
representatives, and develop a strong resume.
According to Humphreys, knowing yourself
is important for job-hunting. Students should
identify their interest and goals, identify
specific experiences where they have demonstrated
their strengths, back up their skills with
examples that make them stronger candidates,
and know why they want to work for the company.
Boon Kok Wee, senior environmental technology
major said, “I’m going to apply to Earth
Tech and Fuscoe Engineering which I have
sent my resume before. These companies
did not come to a job fair last year, so
I think it is a big opportunity for me to
meet employers face to face.”
Students should plan to arrive early at
the fair to allow themselves enough time
to meet with a maximum number of companies,
and dress in an appropriate outfit to look
professional, to make good impression.
After the job fair, students should e-mail
or send a thank-you note to all recruiters
that they contacted to show appreciation
of their help and to demonstrate continued
interest.

and available positions prior to the event,
