An
anonymous Los Angeles County executive gave
a $15,000 donation to the Greek community,
the largest outside donation to Cal State
Long Beach fraternities and sororities that
these organizations have received.
This donation is unique in that most donations
are given to individual fraternities, but
this donation was given to the Greek community
as a whole.
A portion of the contribution was most recently
used for the three-day Greek leadership
retreat.
“The purpose of the retreat was to break
down stereotypes by gathering all four Greek
counsels to create initiative on how to
work together,” said Jeff Klaus, Greek advisor.
“The donation will be used for enhancing
participation in Kaleidoscope and homecoming,”
Klaus said. “It will also go toward educational
programming, including nationally known
speakers such as Mike Green, who will lecture
about the dangers of alcohol use.”
Jeff Blackman, member of Sigma Pi, is satisfied
with money going toward educational programming.
“In the past, speakers have come and talked
about the dangers of alcohol, and they were
very informative.” Blackman said.
“Money
will also be distributed toward different
initiatives such as the Greek e-newsletter,
which will help promote the positive works
of the Greek community and keep Greeks informed
about what each chapter is doing within
the community,” Klaus said.
Members of the Greek community are pleased
with the donation.
“The money is definitely going to be put
to good use,” Blackman said. “The Greek
e-newsletter keeps us tight and informs
us about functions that we want to attend.”
Student Life and Development has a new relationship
with the Greeks. Instead of being a regulator,
SLD is more like a partner.
“The Greeks view our office as a resource,
and they look to us to provide guidance
and assistance to accomplish what they need
to do.” Klaus said.
“The donor is pleased with the progress
Student Life and Development is making with
Greek unity,” Klaus said. “The donor is
aware of the progress and future goals of
SLD and wants to ensure they achieve those
goals. It is this type of relationship that
inspires people to donate to the Greek community,”
he said.
“SLD finds new ways to make fraternities
and sororities successful and SLD provides
the tools for them to be effective,” Klaus
said.
