The
Cal State Long Beach University Library
has begun to see student crowds as finals
week arrives. The library has extended its
opening hours for two weeks to meet students’
demand.
A
long list shows that students badly need
a study room. The study areas were also
packed with students cramming while some
fell asleep on the couches. The computer
lab, where no one talks, was filled with
the sound of keyboard tapping. The seats
were all filled up, concentrating on typing
out their final papers.
“I’ve
waited for almost an hour to get a computer,”
said Daniel Burdines, junior of business
major at CSULB while waiting to use the
computer for his final project.
Library officials have tried to build
ways to improve the situation and have extended
its services to students.
“Although
we recently extended study rooms availability,
it’s still hard to keep up with demand during
the peak period of midterms and finals,”
said Henry Dubois, associate dean of the
University Library.
The
library has received funding from Proposition
47 for a major building renovation, which
will create new study rooms and wireless
connections for lab-top use within the next
three years, Dubois said.
“Another
benefit will be public restrooms on the
first floor and Internet Café-Coffee
Bar and also the expanded Information Commons
in the current reference area,” Dubois said.
Dubois
stressed the library’s mission to serve
students and emphasized its primary goals
to meet students and faculty members’ needs.
“I
want to stress that the library’s mission
is to serve students’ information needs
and to support their course-related study
and research. Our staff works very hard
to be as efficient and helpful and knowledgeable
as possible in fulfillment of this mission,”
he said. “We work closely with student leadership,
and invite comments and suggestions for
improvement of our services from them and
from all CSULB students.”
CSULB
student, Joyce Taylor, senior psychology
major said she always studies in the library
because it’s the only place she can concentrate
on her works.
“When
I tried to study at home, something will
always come on to interrupt you, like a
phone call or mom’s calling. That’s why
I always study at the library,” she said.
