“I
love helping people and serving the students
of this university. The passion I have gets
me up in the morning and keeps me going
through the evening,” said Danny Vivian,
the newly reelected president of Associated
Students Inc. Vivian received 54.3
percent of the vote, which led to his second
term as the A.S.I. president. Vivian is
one of only three students in campus history
to serve multiple terms as president.
“
I am very happy to be given the opportunity
to serve the students of this university
for another year,” Vivian said.
Vivian possesses multilingual ability in
Spanish, French and English. He is currently
majoring in international business at Cal
State Long Beach. Besides his duties as
a college student, Vivian has participated
in various extra-curricular activities,
which helped develop his strong background
and experience.
“I have chaired the Chicano/Latino Celebration,
served as the president of Latino Student
Union, president of Delta Sigma Chi, A.S.
senator, A.S.I. vice president, and my first
job was teaching martial arts for five years,”
Vivian said.
During his last term as the A.S.I. president,
Vivian made several contributions to CSULB,
including organizing a rally of over 150
students to protest student fee increases.
He has worked to extend hours in the library
during finals, to increase group study rooms
in the library and increase pep rallies.
Vivian testified at the California Senate
Committee on Higher Education hearing about
rising textbook costs. Vivian also worked
against changing the grading policy, and
helped with the conservation mugs.
Vivian’s continued goal as president is
to represent the students’ best interests
and serve on their behalf in dealing with
school policies.
“We
do a lot for our students, more than they
even know or in some cases imagine,” he
said. One of the projects that Vivian plans
is to launch an online teacher evaluation
for the coming year.
“For
next year, it’s all about communication,”
Vivian said.
Some of Vivian’s colleagues showed their
support for his A.S.I. role and his ability.
“I
have faith in the wisdom of our students
to vote for student leaders who effectively
represent their views and wishes,” said
Doug Robinson, vice president of Student
Services.
“Danny
certainly worked hard during his first term
to ensure that students were well represented
during decision-making processes that affect
programs, services, budgets and facilities
at our campus,” Robinson said.
Samuel Lingrosso, the assistant director
of Judicial Affairs and Ethical Development,
has worked with Vivian in the past, and
expressed his view toward Vivian’s performance.
“In every instance, Danny has been responsive
to issues and concerns, and he has assured
me that he will take specific steps to strengthen
the roles of all of the branches of the
student government,” said Lingrosso. “I
am optimistic to see the ideas that Danny
and I have discussed take root during his
next term in office.”
The A.S.I. Vice President Shahrokh Sheik
also has confidence in Vivian’s role as
A.S.I. president, and made his comment on
Vivian’s performance.
“Danny has a great amount of knowledge and
experience in A.S.I. operations and he constantly
uses that to effectively represent the students
interests at Long Beach State,” Sheik said.
