Cal
State Long Beach and Long Beach City College
students are displaying their colored pencil
still life work at the Long Beach Main Library.
The art graces on the left wall of the main
lobby in the library and bringing a little
color to the somewhat drab colored lobby.
The art itself meets high standards, with
very realistic still lifes bursting with
color. The color blending looks like the
artists created their own colors. The layering
with colored pencil gives the pieces a rich,
hearty look.
One piece depicts the interesting way that
pencil can be used to create the effect
of shiny glass. The work is very realistic
looking with a lot of emphasis on detail,
which might explain why the piece has already
sold for $150. Other examples of price range
from Ken Estes’s piece that is being sold
for $500 to Roy Blanco’s piece that is not
for sale.
The display itself is nothing to brag about
because there is not very much color to
really draw the visitor’s attention to the
remainder of the display.
