Students display Almost Idol

If you are looking for the next Shakira or Mariah Carey, then look no further because she is right here in Long Beach. Susan Muñoz, a Cal State Long Beach music major, beat out 17 other contestants in the Almost Idol competition put on by the CSULB Public Relations Student Society of America Thursday night at New York Bryan’s Bar and Grill in downtown Long Beach.

The contest was hosted by five CSULB public relation students as a class project for the Bateman team contest. The Bateman team contest is a nation wide competition sponsored by the Public Relation Society of America, which is the parent society of PRSSA.

The PRSSA group at CSULB is one of the participants in the nationwide contest held once each year to promote certain products. This year the PRSSA promoted Nutella.

“The Bateman team put this on and it was promoted by PRSSA at CSULB to make Nutella a household name,” Monique Acosta, a CSULB senior public relations student said.

“The show [Almost Idol] is a spin off of ‘American Idol,’” senior Jenny Pyott, CSULB public relations major said. “The event was held to promote Nutella.”

Almost Idol was just that. They had three judges just like on “American Idol” and contestants were critiqued after their performances. Students Rasheed Richardson played the role of Randy Jackson, and Brittney Meridith played the role of Paula Abdul. Matt Cabot, a professor at CSULB, played the role of Simon Cowell.

Out of the 18 contestants only five would be selected to go to the final round. Every contested had to be over the age of 17 and sing a cappella, in which they performed everything from Elton John to Hoobastank.

“Everyone was really talented,” Richardson said. “We had a good caliber of people and it was really hard for us to pick the final five and three.”

“It feels great. It feels awesome. I’m so happy,” Muñoz said about winning. “It gave me the opportunity to perform what I like, which is pop [music].”
