Polanski should not hide from truth forever

By Oscar Montealegre

It seems that Hollywood celebrities can get away with almost everything, even sexual assault. Director Roman Polanski of “The Pianist” has been on a 26-year-run from denying his infamous statutory rape case in 1977 involving a then 13-year-old Samantha Gailey.

How appropriate that this issue comes right back to Polanski, who is getting praise with “The Pianist.”

Back in 1977 with his indictment, Polanski spent a mere 45 days in jail along with a psychiatric evaluation. Just when the judge decided the evaluation, he fled the country!

Now that Polanski is up for an academy award for best director, there are critics saying this case will not hinder his chances of obtaining a golden statue.

It would a drastic sight to see Polanski accept an award in his safe haven of France, in fact it would be ridiculous. It’s silly to see photos of nominees at the event instead of a close up of a still photo of a happy-go-lucky Polanski.

Ever since his little escapade with Gailey, Polanski cannot enter the Untied States, or else he will be arrested. It appears that Polanski has gone into some form of permanent hiding, unwilling to face the music and accept that he was wrong.

It may eventually get to the point where Polanski cannot take the escape of his problems, and confess, who knows?

This has not been the first case that celebrities have run from their wrongdoings. But, as long as celebrities have the money to hide away from their problems, they can guarantee a guilt-free life.

However, is there the issue of hindering their careers? Of course! If anybody is convicted of a crime, he or she must face the penalties, there is no beating around the bush! Because a person is in the public-eye, doesn’t mean he or she can get off by booking a one-way flight to France.

Polanski may have made a successful film, but lets focus on the crime he has committed. It is obvious why Polanski is safe in Europe, free from all his troubles he committed in America. Because of his Oscar nomination, the awful truth of what happened in 1977 with statutory rape is coming back around.

Perhaps the Academy can show a still photo of him and a one way plane ticket, back to the United States. If he does win on that night, perhaps Polanski should accept the award where the event is held. No one is above the law, even Polanski!
