Poets
read while the band played on at the Poet’s
Lounge Thursday at the small auditorium
in the University Student Union.
“The poet’s lounge is an open mike forum
where poets from all walks of life can come
and read their poetry,” Tyrone Robinson
of the USU Program Council said. “The lounge
is held once a month and anyone is welcome
to come read his or her poetry or just listen
in.”
“About 200 people showed up for Thursday’s
performance,” Cammie Are of the Program
Council said. “We have a following of about
50 students that come out regularly,”
The featured band, the J. Evans Project,
played quietly in the background and other
times held back as poets came up and read
their material.
“We’ve always had a band,” Are said. “The
J. Evans Project has been our band ever
since we started back in 1998,”.
One of the featured poets who read at the
lounge was Gaknew, who offered his variety
of slam poetry, a competitive style of spoken
word and prose.
“In slam poetry, participant’s travel to
various competitions around the county and
are judged by other poets and people in
the audience,” Are said.
A sign up sheet is passed for those wishing
to read in the beginning of the show.
“Our poet’s lounge is getting a lot of recognition
in the community,” Are said.
The next poet’s lounge will be held on March
20.
