Cargo Pants, metallic wear still in quality fashion

By Janelle L. Burns

Besides the predominant bright color pallet this season, the two other hot trends are cargo pants and metallic goods. I am not sure if anyone can argue that cargo pants ever went out of style, but they are now in the limelight.  In fact, I am sure that many of us still have the first purchased pair. Cargos are so comfortable and great to bum around in on the weekends however, don’t just yank those old ones out and make like new. Every time a particular garment becomes popular again, the shape also changes. You will run the risk of looking dated if you sport the big, straight leg, drawstring cargos of past seasons.

This season, some cargos may have drawstrings and some will have a straight leg cut, but you won’t see the elements put together the same way as before. A drawstring may be a delicate detail to a pair of sumptuous satin or silk cargo pants. No longer are cargos restricted to khaki, twill and fatigue patterns sold at the Army and Navy surplus stores. Satin cargos are a great idea for a date or evening event when included with some sexy heels and a polished top. The khaki and twill versions will have different style pocketing, button and zipper detailing, and possibly drawstrings at the ankle. You can see why your old cargos won’t cut it if you are going for the updated look — by all means, hold on to them for lazy Saturdays.

The next trend popping up like crazy is anything metallic — shoes, bags, materials and even eye shadow. I am extremely weary about this trend. Every time I see metallic anything sitting pretty on displays in stores, disco flashes before my eyes and I  do not like what I see. We have all heard the horror stories and seen pictures of how ridiculous our parents’ party days were. Even worse, remember L.A. Gears in the ’80s? They had a flat-soled sneaker in metallic gold and silver that old ladies would wear to match their jewelry. To me, this trend gives me flashbacks of awful moments in fashion history — but it may be fine a dandy with you. If you are going to venture and try metallic pieces, remember that less is more.
