On-line Forty-Niner

Frank Potenza This Friday and Saturday, students can have the chance to see Frank Potenza with the Shelly Berg Quartet at the Orange County Performing Arts Center at an affordable price.

OCPAC is offering student rush tickets one hour prior to the performance for only $10 a ticket.

Jazz Now magazine quoted “Potenza’s unique take on what is really standard guitar playing shines as brightly as well-polished silver dollar.”

Potenza and Berg, who are both teachers at the University of Southern California will feature Red Holloway, one of the music world’s preeminent saxophone players.

Musicians will include Shelley Berg on piano, Red Holloway on saxophone, Luther Hughes on bass and Paul Kreibich on drums.

Bringing his talent to OCPAC, Berg is an accomplished pianist and arranger for trombonist Bill Watrous and music director for vocalist Carmen Bedford. Some of the bands Berg has orchestrated for include Kiss, Chicago and Richard Marx.

Berg has arranged music for films such as “Men of Honor,” and “Three to Tango,” as well as serving as chairman of jazz studies at USC.

Scott’s Seafood, the official sponsor of the Jazz Club Series has also brought in legendary composer Dave Brubeck earlier this month.

Brubeck said “Shelly Berg is a great jazz pianist who seems to have total command of his instrument.”

Angela Dickson, public relations for OCPAC said that the discount has been going on for a consistent amount of time.

Students must have a valid ID to purchase with a limit of two tickets per person.
