Voters at the Broadway by the Sea polling place flexed their political muscle yesterday by voting on the California gubernatorial recall election. According to the Secretary of State a turnout of 60 percent is likely. Which exceeds the 50 percent turnout from last November.

News

  • Californians recall Davis Schwarzenegger elected
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Californians banished Gray Davis on Tuesday, capping an extraordinary political melodrama by recalling the governor just 11 months after they re-elected him. Exit polls indicated Hollywood action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger was leading the field of candidates to replace him.

  • Student parking used by faculty
Cal State Long Beach students are not receiving all the open parking spaces they paid for.

  • Young voters remain disengaged despite recall election hype
BERKELEY (U-Wire) -- Although a strong showing from young voters in the polls Tuesday could sway the state's historical recall election, few in the slew of gubernatorial candidates have riled up this voting block, which is notorious for passing up elections.

  • Girls who use men for free lunch justified
Please take a moment to picture this sleep over I recently attended. About 20 college girls have their sleeping bags and are crammed into a small Long Beach second floor apartment. We are all wearing our favorite little silk bottom shorts and bubble-gum color tank tops. And we each have a red cup on their head.

  • Dress codes are not meant for college crowd
"Uh, excuse me Ms. Guevara. Would you mind pulling up your pants a little? Your thong is visible to the entire classroom."

Opinion

  • Our View: Parents liable for  kid's actions
One mother allowed her home and 12-year-old son to become unhygienic enough that her son hanged himself, another mildly mentally disabled woman gave birth to a stillborn child after taking crack cocaine. Both women have been or are going to be tried for charges associated with the deaths of their children. Prosecutors are using laws around the nation to make parents liable for their actions, even if there was no criminal intent.

  • Iraq needs more time
It has been almost five months since President Bush declared an end to major combat operations in Iraq. It was also around this time that the political left decided to move on from throwing temper tantrums in the middle of Wilshire Boulevard.

Sports

  • 49ers drop three of four in tournament
The Long Beach State men's water polo team headed north to play in the Northern California Tournament at Stanford last weekend, but the 49ers saw its record head in a different direction--south.

  • It is a tough time for fans of Oakland's teams
As the seasons go by it gets tougher and tougher to be a devoted Oakland sports fan. Sunday the Raiders lost their third game of the season to the Chicago Bears no less blowing an 18-3 halftime lead.
