Women's soccer adjusts to injury

Natalie Messina

The women's soccer team is hoping to change a couple of round numbers into a couple of crooked ones this weekend, when they host the first 49er Classic at George Allen Field.

Those two round numbers come in the win column, and in the goals scored column, where The Beach (0-4-0) have zeros in both after four games.

Senior forward, Abie Curry, summed it all up in one word for what The Beach wants to improve on this weekend.

"Finishing," she said. "We have had a lot of opportunities, and I think we just need to capitalize on them... I think if we finish we are going to kill teams."

Curry had a couple of opportunities against Hawaii, but couldn't get the ball in the net. The team had a season-high 13 shots on goal in the game, but was shutout and it left the senior a bit frustrated.

"Hawaii was a really good game to see us play all together," said Curry who is one point away from being the all-time points leader at Cal Sate Long Beach (goals equal two points, assists equal one point). "It was kind of frustrating [not to score] because I am on the front line and I take it upon myself because I am a senior... I just need to get it in the back of the net, but if anybody else makes the scores I don't care, I just want my team to win."

The 49ers could use some good news this weekend after learning that sophomore defender, Natalie Messina, will be out for the rest of the year after injuring her right leg against Stanford. Kat Avendano has suffered two concussions already this year as well.

"Injuries have really hurt us because it has forced us to change our lineups," head coach Peter Reynaud said. Allison Wiegand, who was supposed to play forward, is now being moved to fullback and The Beach will play with four midfielders instead of three as a result of the injuries, he added.

The 49er Classic will feature UC Santa Barbara, Southern Utah and Eastern Washington. The Beach will play Eastern Washington on Friday at 4 p.m. and Southern Utah on Sunday at 1 p.m.

This should be a good chance for the 49ers to enter the win column considering the four teams involved have only one win combined.

"I think these two games are going to be really good for us," Curry said. "I think we are going to play well. I am stoked. I want to finish some goals. If those come this weekend I think it will be good for us."
