College football title game a mess again

From the bench

It must be the second week of December because the annual search for who snatched the C out of the BCS continues.

Oh the computers, hopefully a Terminator will be sent from the future to destroy these computers before they ruin another college football season.

Apparently the computers like to reward the second place team in the Big 12 Conference because this is the second time now that the conference championship game loser will make it to the national championship game over a more qualified Pac 10 team.

Two years ago the Nebraska Cornhuskers received the berth into the national championship game after being smoked by Colorado in the Big 12 Championship Game over a very qualified Oregon team. Nebraska again got smoked in a laugher at the hands of Miami.

It is likely that Oklahoma could win the national championship and not even be able to claim a conference championship. Something doesn't add up there.

Speaking of not adding up, take a look at how the BCS actually decided this farce of a game. USC was relegated to the Rose Bowl because its schedule was not as strong as either Louisiana State or Oklohoma. According to the BCS Bowling Green State, yes Bowling Green State also has a stronger schedule than the Trojans. Yeah, that's Bowling Green, and for those of you who don't know, and I was one of them, BGSU is in Ohio, they play in the MAC which stands for Mid American Conference.

The Falcon's, Bowling Green's mascot, stronger-than-Pac-10-schedule included football powerhouses like Liberty, Toledo, Eastern Kentucky and made the rounds of Michigan, playing Eastern, Western and Central Michigan Universities.

The Falcons also played and lost to Miami...of Ohio, another MAC powerhouse is another of the peculiarities of the BCS. Jeff Sagarin one of the computer geeks who control the fate of the college football teams has Miami...of Ohio rated as the No. 3 team and USC as the No. 4 team. I guess I should start watching MAC football if only I can find a satellite that actually picks up the games.

Back to the teams who will be playing for the national championship, LSU edged out USC because of its stronger schedule which included Louisiana Monroe, Louisiana Tech and Western Illinois. Let us not forget that the pseudo-national championship game is the Sugar Bowl this year and that the Sugar Bowl is played in New Orleans. Is there any chance that there would be more money in an Louisiana State/ Oklahoma game in New Orleans and a USC/ Michigan game in Pasadena?

"What we have are three very deserving teams and only two of them are in the game," BCS coordinator Mike Tranghese said.

Tranghese, ABC and the Sears company, the namesake for the championship trophy will surely be wearing Michigan blue New Year's Day hoping that the Wolverines can beat the Trojans and help the BCS save face and make it one more controversy-laden season.
