Sports Briefs

• CHICAGO (AP) -- The Florida Marlins traded first baseman Derrek Lee to the Chicago Cubs in a cost-cutting measure, getting Hee Seop Choi and a minor leaguer to be named.

• CLEVELAND (AP) -- Former Indians manager Mike Hargrove was hired by Cleveland as a senior adviser to the team's baseball operations department.

• ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- The Orlando Magic signed veteran point guard Rod Strickland. Strickland has averaged 14.2 points and 7.7 assists in his 15-year career.

• WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Washington Wizards placed point guard Gilbert Arenas on the injured list because of a severe abdominal sprain. Arenas, injured Nov. 23 at Seattle, will miss at least five games.

• DENVER (AP) -- The Denver Broncos suspended Daryl Gardener for two more games after he lashed out publicly at head coach Mike Shanahan for an earlier one-game suspension.
The original suspension was for unspecified conduct detrimental to the team. Gardener responded by telling a Denver radio station last week that he didn't believe Shanahan wants him on the team and called the coach ''that little man up there.''
Those comments violated a clause in every NFL contract requiring players to give their best efforts and loyalty to their team, the Broncos said in a statement.

• DETROIT (AP) -- A woman was charged with lying to police for accusing Detroit Lions wide receiver Scotty Anderson of rape.
Prosecutor Mike Duggan said that Nicole Dolores Milburn was not raped and did not have sex with Anderson. Milburn was charged with filing a false police report. If convicted, she could face up to four years in jail. Anderson never faced charges in the case.
