The
women's volleyball team fought hard to beat
the Eastern Washington University Eagles
but were defeated in a four game match on
Thursday in The Pyramid.
Most
expected the Beach (3-1) to win easily against
an Eagles (1-4) team that had a successful
season last year but came into the Pyramid
winless on Thursday.
With
its momentum high, the women's volleyball
team graced the court. Everyone cheered
as they came out, ready to experience the
first thrill of volleyball for the semester.
Eastern Washington's captain, Jessie Wright,
netted the first serve. Long Beach's, Erika
Chidester came on strong with four kills
in the first half of the game. Jillian
Mazzarella followed up with three defensive
digs. From the first time-out to the second,
the team's attack average improved.
"We
got off to a good start," said returning
freshman, Robin Miramontes. "We knew
going into the game that it wasn't going
to be easy, but we relaxed a little which
ended up hurting us in the end." In
a close game, the Eagles won 30-27.
In
game two, the final score reversed, the
Beach lost 27-30. A short-lived victory
for Long Beach and the most stressful moment
for coach, Brian Gimmillaro who got a yellow
card for arguing a play with the referee.
"After
the second game, we got our momentum back,"
said Miramontes. "We went in to the
third game a little more confident."
Her seven kills, Chidester's 14 and the
team's confidence still weren't enough to
win the game. Eastern Washington defeated
them 30-26.
Eastern
Washington started off well in the fourth
game. Long Beach State came back with a
total of fifty one kills and forty four
defensive digs by the end. The Eagles
pushed a little more. They beat LBSU by
fifteen points.
"We
have the tools and the skills," said
Miramontes after the match. "Now we
have to use them."
The
team will travel to San Diego to play Maryland-Eastern
Shore Friday at 5:00 p.m. in the University
of San Diego Tournament.
