Third place finish for 49er golf

Ryan Wood

Brett Lederer

Fortunate scheduling and consistent play allowed the 49er men's golf team to finish third in the Bill Cullum/Countrywide Home Loans Intercollegiate Tournament.

The tournament was held at Wood Ranch Country Club, only one mile from where the wildfires have consumed homes and lives this past weekend in Simi Valley.

"If the tournament had been held one week later, it would have been cancelled," head coach Bob Livingstone said.

It was a good tournament for The Beach as the team beat all of its Big West Conference opponents as well as finishing ahead of all of the West Region opponents.

Success against these teams means that the team can be competitive in the Big West Championships and NCAA West Regionals next semester.

Brett Lederer and Ryan Wood finished tied for 16th and tops for the 49ers, shooting 218 in the three-round tournament and 9 strokes behind the tournament winner, Billy Moon of CSU Stanislaus.

Livingstone said he has been pleasantly surprised by the play of Wood thus far and that if the freshman from Oceanside were better conditioned he could have finished better.

Wood shot under par in the first round Monday but was tired in the afternoon round and shot seven strokes higher.

Livingstone added that Wood is also the least excited about the team's exercise program.

CSU Stanislaus and the University of Utah were the only teams to finish ahead of The Beach in the tournament, finishing first and second respectively.

49er golf will be back in action Nov. 6-7 when it hosts the Del Walker Intercollegiate at home course Virginia Country Club.
