Poor
air quality due to three fires in Southern
California forced the postponement of the
49ers' women's soccer game last weekend
at UC Irvine.
Big
West commissioner Dennis Farrell moved the
game to tonight at 7 p.m. on the campus
of UCI after both UCI and LBSU's athletic
directors voiced concerns about the health
of participants.
The
49ers were ready to play after warming up
for 30 minutes when the game was postponed
10 minutes prior to start-time.
49er
head coach Peter Reynaud said that this
is the first time in his coaching career
when a game has been postponed. Reynaud
did recall an instance in Washington when
a game was postponed for a few minutes due
to lightning, but never because of air quality.
The
timing of the postponement could not be
worse because the 49ers will now have to
play its final three Big West Conference
games in a span of six days which concerned
Reynaud.
With
a strong showing this week, The Beach could
finish in first place in the conference
and a No. 1 seed in the conference championships
Nov. 7-9.
