The Long Beach State women's soccer team was on the road this past weekend. Their first stop was University of Pacific where the 49ers lost a close match 2-1. The team then came back to Long Beach where it defeated Cal State Northridge 2-1.

"Overall we played well," 49ers' head coach Peter Reynuad said. "Road games are always tough. You have to win at least one road game and we did so I'm happy."

Allison Wiegand used her great speed and technique to score both goals for the 49ers (6-7-0, 2-2-0 Big West) in the first half of Sunday's game against Northridge (3-7-3, 1-3-0 Big West) to give her team a 2-0 lead. Her first goal came in the 37th minute when Wiegand took an outside pass from teammate Amber Olivera and put it in the goal. Wiegand notched her second goal seven minutes later. After her shot was saved by CSUN's goalie. The clear out went to Rachel Henderson who passed the ball back to Wiegand and she made sure the ball went in this time.

"I saw that that their fullbacks weren't fast," Reynaud said. "I put Allison at the forward because she has good speed and I knew she could create opportunities for us in the middle with her speed."

CSUN managed to cut the lead in half during the second half when the Matadors scored a goal at the 60-minute mark. But that was as close as the Matadors would come. The 49ers defense headed by Lauren Doffing held Northridge off for the remainder of the game. This was not an easy victory for the 49ers as CSUN played its usual "very physical, very aggressive" game said Reynaud.

"Every time we play Northridge we have this problem," Reynaud said. "They like to come from behind and take you down. But we just got up, didn't say a word and just played our game."

"They were dirty," Abie Curry said. "They always foul a lot. We just played more aggressive and played our game."

The 49ers didn't fair so well on Friday against UOP (3-8-1, 2-1-0 Big West) losing a heartbreaker 2-1. Carmen Padilla put UOP up 1-0 in the 19th minute. Kristina Fetter doubled the score for the Tigers at the beginning of the second sending her shot past the 49ers' goalie. The Beach played well in this game but missed several opportunities that would give the team the victory. Many of the 49ers' shots hit the post and the crossbar several times.

"We should have won that game," Reynaud said. "We outplayed them. We played hard. We were a little unlucky. We missed a lot of good opportunities. We could have easily scored more goals, we had opportunities we just couldn't finish."

The 49ers lone goal came in the 70th minute courtesy of the Tigers' defense. Kristin Travis took the ball down on the wing for the 49ers and sent a cross to an open Curry. Tiger's defender Katie McCurdy tried to intercept the pass and head it out, but she put it right into Pacific's own goal.

The 49ers will play at the George Allen Field this weekend when they host Utah State Friday and Idaho Sunday.
