Two volleyball teams will enter The Pyramid this weekend, each with a share of the Big West Conference lead, and one will exit the building on top.

The 25th ranked 49ers women's volleyball team (10-3, 5-1) will face UC Irvine (14-4, 5-1) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the only game of the weekend for the women.

"It's a big weekend for us," team captain Erika Chidester said. "It's our
first time we play them in conference and it is important we win."

No one on the team doubts the importance of this early season game.

"Everyone is saying we're a young team so it gives
us something to prove," co-captain Heather Laudato said. "UCI runs multiple games...they'll be a more complex team. Defensively they're tough. It should be a good game."

Having only one game this weekend may be a good chance for the team to have a little extra rest
for the many players who are competing while injured but the injuries may
hamper the team during the match.

"We always play through [injuries], people [on our team] are tough," Laudato said.

"They have the ability mentally to block out the physical stuff."

The Beach, winners of five straight, have just one loss during the conference schedule, losing at UC Riverside Sept. 19. UCI, also losers of only one conference game, lost to the University of Idaho last weekend.

"[The game] will be a true test of how good we've
gotten," Laudato said.
