Our View: Consumers on cue

And they're off! The sales, the malls, the parking lots. The festivities of the true holiday season have begun.

But will this year be different? The year has been imbued with a downward spiral atmosphere, and even as reports continue that the economy is growing again, many of us are still waiting. Does this mean bonus checks? Holiday raises? We doubt it.

Like most things economic in nature, it all seems slightly intangible. Consumer confidence, the worth of the dollar, the entire basis of the stock market: based completely on imaginary rumblings. No wonder money seems to be some people's religion.

So as we prepare for gobble-gobble day, our nation's first class advertising campaigns will seek to lure us all into a feeding frenzy. Because our hard earned dollar is the only one that can line the pockets of the corporations, because we are the spenders that can pull the nation out of it. Or so they tell us.

So while they're laying people off, decreasing benefits and salaries so that they can make an extra buck, it is up to us, Super-middle-class, to save the day. By buying a bunch of garbage that only some people want and nobody really needs.

So as we all prepare for the holiday season, let us all remember the true meaning of giving, Visa, everywhere you want to be.
