Thankful
for being “right” again
Jason

Thanksgiving
is one of my favorite times of the year.
I don’t get
too many chances to go home to Bakersfield
and eat a home cooked meal. So I really
appreciate the chance to do that, and see
family and old friends.
One
of the things I have come to really appreciate
about Thanksgiving dinner at my house is
before eating we go around the table and
say something we are thankful for. It helps
us all remember what the purpose of Thanksgiving
is, to be thankful for what we have. This
sounds obvious, but it is worth saying.
This
year I have many things to be thankful for.
I
am thankful for having the chance to write
columns like this one in the Union first,
and now the Daily Forty-Niner. I have been
doing this for almost a year, and I still
am not over the fact the opportunity to
do something I love has been presented to
me.
I
am thankful for all the people who read
what I write, especially those who have
taken the time to email me. I am especially
thankful to those who write opposing views
in response. They may be thankful to hear
this, but the liberals that rebut what I
say are the people I learn the most from.
I
am thankful for Michael Moore winning an
Oscar for best documentary for “Bowling
for Columbine.” Before he won I hated
the Academy Awards because I thought they
were silly, frivolous and a waste of everyone’s
time. Thanks to Moore, now I know they are.
I
am thankful the state senate voted to repeal
SB 60, the infamous law that gave drivers
licenses to illegal immigrants. The idea
that they are here to stay and deserve it
was the same nonsense liberals were giving
us about Gray Davis, and we know where that
got them.
Since
I mention “Uncle Joe” Davis
(his real name is Joseph), I am thankful
for the recall, and for the people not buying
in to the liberal spin doctors saying it
will destroy the foundations of democracy.
To the contrary, it is the epitome of one.
To
those who think it was a right-wing power
grab, a Republican may have funded most
of it, but nobody was forced to sign the
petitions. Nobody was forced to vote yes,
and nobody was forced to vote for a Republican.
Despite
the fact two Republicans were running, Governor
Schwarzenegger got more votes in a special
election than Davis did in his halfhearted
reelection a year earlier.
I’m
thankful for that too.
I
am thankful for liberals being liberal.
Their asinine comparisons of Bush to Hitler,
and Clinton-like defense against ousting
a crazy Saddam Hussein have made it very
easy for me to decide which side of the
political aisle is right for me.
Which
brings me to being thankful for being a
member of a party whose president is willing
to stand up to evil, whether it had weapons
of mass destruction or not.
Lastly,
I am always thankful to be living in the
United States of America. After more than
200 years it is still the land of opportunity
and freedom. Contrary to what many of my
political opposites may say, there is no
other place in the
world, or history, which has provided the
quality of life this country has. As the
son of an immigrant whose family came here
with almost nothing, this is not so difficult
for me to understand.
I
want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving,
even the liberals. Take the time to reflect
on what you are thankful for, and I hope
yours will be a good as I know mine will
be.
