Letters
to the editor: Forty-Niner correction
I
am grateful to the On-line Forty-Niner for
its efforts to help the library alert the
campus community to the impact of state
budget reductions on the library's ability
to buy books, media, and subscriptions [Library
Hurt by State Deficit, 10/27/03]. Please
allow me to correct some statements made
in your story, however, that may be misleading
to your readers:
• The library book and media budget (not
the budget for all information materials)
has been reduced to $100,000 for 03/04.
• For all of the 03/04 fiscal year (not
beginning next January) we are trying to
accommodate only essential book and media
purchases in support of instruction
• It is absolutely untrue that "most
subscriptions will be cancelled;" actually,
an average of only about 10% of the library's
subscriptions won't be renewed.
The story was correct in reporting the library's
commitment and determination to continue
to provide our student and faculty constituents
with every book and article they need though
all means available to us; we are working
to minimize the effects of an unfavorable
state and University budget climate on our
users.
