Letter
to the editor: Employee parking difficult
also
As
an 18-year veteran employee of the university
I felt I needed to reply to your front page
article on parking issues. There is a kind
of balance going on here, as students notice
staff in the student parking lots, staff
notice students in the staff parking lots,
and not just the campus ambassador permits.
Yes, that's right, no matter how little
time students need to park illegally at
Brotman Hall while they run in to take care
of some last minute items at the business
office or Enrollment Services, they are
still parked illegally. And when students
park illegally in our lot that forces the
staff to park in "their" lots
(legally, except at the dorms). Oh, and
don't forget that the lots near Brotman
Hall are a favorite place for special event
parking, compounding the issue.
By
the way, staff also has to pay for parking.
That needs to be made clear since in the
fourth paragraph it was implied that only
students pay for parking. Let's multiply
$14 per month, 12 months per year times
18 years. That's well over $3,000 that I
have paid for parking here at Cal State
Long Beach! You'd expect by now that I would
have my own parking spot, but I, like all
other faculty and staff, pay for the privilege
of parking on campus, not the guarantee
of parking on campus.
Let's
face it, parking here is tight for everyone,
especially at the beginning of each semester.
So every time a student parks illegally
in a staff parking lot that increases the
chances of the faculty or staff being forced
to find a parking space in the student lots.
Basically
we all need to realize that parking is a
tough issue and we all should respect the
parking restrictions here.
