• CAMPBELL (AP) -- Less than two weeks after a grand jury cleared a police officer of criminal wrongdoing in the fatal shooting of a Vietnamese mother, the victim's parents and sons filed a civil lawsuit seeking unspecified damages in federal court.

• MODESTO (AP) -- An FBI scientist on Wednesday defended the forensic evidence offered by a co-worker that linked Laci Peterson to a hair found in a boat her husband said he took fishing the day she disappeared.

• SAN JOSE (AP) -- Police said Wednesday they've arrested all three teenage girls who escaped from a group home after allegedly tying up their counselor at knifepoint. Police also safely recovered another young resident, whom authorities believe was kidnapped.

• LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Thousands of immigrants -- mostly Middle Eastern men -- must reregister with the government this month under a federal policy that civil rights advocates say has confused and alienated its targets but failed to net any terrorists.

 

National:

• LAS VEGAS (AP) -- One of the most powerful politicians in southern Nevada resigned as chairwoman of the Clark County Commission on Wednesday, less than a week after being indicted on charges she received kickbacks from a strip club owner.

• MASONVILLE, Colo. (AP) -- Cooler temperatures and lighter wind helped crews gain ground Wednesday against a wildfire that burned 125 acres and forced the evacuation of 63 homes.

• EAGLE, Colo. (AP) -- Kobe Bryant will be back in a Colorado courtroom this week for a brief hearing that will put the NBA star before his trial judge for the first time.

• RENO, Nev. (AP) -- Members of the Nevada Army National Guard's 321st Signal Company were called to active duty Wednesday for deployment to the Middle East.

• ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- About 4,500 commercial fishermen will receive an average of about $2,145 each as part of a $40 million settlement fund generated in the Bristol Bay salmon antitrust case.

• LAS VEGAS (AP) -- The slot machine market was shaken up this week after Alliance Gaming Corp. announced it will buy privately held Sierra Design Group for $191 million.

• TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Forests in the Southwest were the victims of ''a perfect storm'' of drought and bark beetles this past summer, and that will continue until more moisture penetrates the region, a forest health specialist said Wednesday.

 

International:

• RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) -- Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat swore in a new Palestinian Cabinet on Wednesday, getting the government he wanted after a long wrangle and setting the stage for a renewed push to implement the stalled, U.S.-backed ''road map'' peace plan.

• NASIRIYAH, Iraq (AP) -- A suicide bomber blew up a truck packed with explosives at an Italian paramilitary base Wednesday, killing at least 26 people. The United States struck at the Iraqi insurgency hours later, destroying a warehouse in Baghdad and chasing attackers who were seen firing mortars.

• KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- An Afghan soldier opened fire on a coalition convoy at a checkpoint southern Afghanistan, killing one Romanian soldier and wounding another convoy member before escaping, a senior Afghan military commander said Wednesday.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- In a major boost to a U.N. campaign to eradicate an eye infection that causes blindness, Pfizer announced that it will provide an antibiotic free to treat about 90 percent of the 150 million people afflicted.

LONDON (AP) -- A British-built craft designed to scour the surface of Mars for signs of life is scheduled to land on the planet on Christmas Day, scientists said Tuesday.
