USC campus on alert after stabbings

LOS ANGELES (U-Wire) -- The University of Southern California is under a crime alert after two stabbings occurred within ten minutes of each other near the school's main campus this Sunday.

The attacks occurred between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. on Sunday.

The Department of Public Safety posted the crime alert later that day, and sent an e-mail to the student body Thursday evening.

The first stabbing involved a group of University of Southern California students who were walking near the intersection of 29th and Hoover Streets.

A white Lincoln Towncar with no license plates stopped in front of the students, and a Hispanic male who was approximately six feet tall, 180 pounds and 20 years old, exited the car, according to the crime alert.

The man had a knife and tried to instigate a fight, and the students ran away, according to DPS.

One student was stabbed in the upper left shoulder, says Eric Dillon, a firefighter at fire station number 15 who responded to the call regarding the second stabbing.

DPS, the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Fire Department responded.

DPS and LAPD were unable to locate the suspects, and LAFD took the student to California Hospital Medical Center.

The second victim was a 15-year-old boy from the neighborhood, Dillon says.

The boy was walking on 28th Street when the same car involved in the first stabbing and carrying the same four men pulled up next to him, says Alberto Mendez, Assignment Editor of KCAL 9 News in Los Angeles.

The men accused the boy of stealing something from them, then one exited the car and cut the boy on the face with a knife, according to DPS.

A member of the Delta Chi fraternity saw the incident occur and took the boy into the frat house.

"(They) took him in and took care of him and bandaged him up," Dillion says.

DPS responded to the incident at 1:41 a.m., and the LAFD took the boy to Los Angeles County-USC hospital.
