Nugget re-opens with new look, high expectations

Workers continue renovation on The Nugget in order for it to have its updated look completed by the first day of classes

Popular on-campus eatery, The Nugget, under construction since the beginning of summer, will be back on Sept. 2, the first day of classes.

"The new look will have a lot of brick and will incorporate the school colors into the paint theme," said Clint Campbell, director of retail food services.

Roman Gulon, the general manager of Forty Niner Shops Inc, said that they renovated The Nugget in its entirety, including the furniture, the sound system, the restaurant and a new stage.

Campbell said that it has been under development for approximately three years. There was a general survey conducted among the students to determine the most popular atmosphere in restaurants.

"From those surveys, student focus groups were formed to more clearly define what the students were looking for. From there the architect three different concepts with the final design being based on comments from all three concepts."

Even though the cost of construction is more than $1 million, The Nugget was chosen for re-modeling because, "More than anything else, it was simply beginning to show its age, and we wanted to create a place where the students would feel comfortable socializing after classes," Campbell said.

Marie Miyashiro, a senior liberal studies major, said, " I hope they changed the furniture. I just want them to finish before school starts because I like their food."

"I definitely want to go there. We needed a change because the building was old." Mike Tsai, a junior accounting major said.

The program at The Nugget will continue with live music on Thursday nights this year. "We will be featuring a coffee bar with espressos and ice blended coffee drinks and we have also added Fair Trade coffee to our menu," Campbell said.

The Nugget is located in the University Dining Plaza, it serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. People can also watch television while eating at The Nugget.

The regular business hours of the Nugget will be 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.
