In a crowded club in Long Beach, Chapter 11, a local underground hip-hop and reggae group, has been attracting music fans with its original sound and live performances.
Chapter 11 consists of nine members from Long Beach, and four members are alumni of Cal State Long Beach.

"Long Beach is a great school," said Javier Contender, the front man of Chapter 11. "I worked part-time, did school full-time and partied full-time."

Contender graduated from CSULB in 1999 with a liberal arts degree in Asian studies.

Joe Chang graduated with a degree in economics and business marketing. He has been trained classically and incorporates many aspects of jazz into his keyboard playing.

Drummer Jungle Josh majored in business, and DJ Jace One majored in marketing.

Chapter 11 released its full-length independent album, "Live & Direct" in September.

"In order to keep our creative control, we manage ourselves," said Kep Won, who added that the group will continue to be underground until they can find a record company that fits their music style.

Chapter 11 is planning a collaboration of a world tour with the Japanese hip-hop group, RIZE, a popular band in Japan.

"They gave us a lot of influence to our style of music," Kep Won said.

"More than that, we were impressed by RIZE, the different world of culture, idea and inspiration," Contender said. "We want to visit many countries like Europe and South America. We are excited to go to Japan to drink a lot of sake and Asahi beer."

The surfing, snow boarding and skating culture of Southern California influences a tremendous number of music bands like Chapter 11, he said. Long Beach is one of the most diverse cities in the United States. All members appreciate their loyal fans, friends and family in Long Beach who have supported them.

"We [wouldn't] live anywhere else but Long Beach," Kep Won said.
