October is national Breast Cancer Awareness month, and this year the power of the pink ribbon  spread throughout the fashion industry abroad and at home with students at Cal State Long Beach.

Breast cancer affects millions of women and their families. More than 210,000 women and 1,300 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States this year. The statistics are staggering.

Every 12 minutes, a woman will die from breast cancer in the United States. To show their support, all month long fashion designers and retailers across the country are coming together to help find a cure with style. You can do something to show your support without having to break the bank.

Evelyn Lauder, of the Estee Lauder cosmetic company, founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in 1993. The foundation is dedicated to supporting outstanding clinical and genetic research relating to the causes, treatment, and prevention of breast cancer.

This month, Estee Lauder cosmetic counters across the country offered a beautiful gold and pink compact for $45.00, with a portion of proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Other items for sale at Estee Lauder include pink lipsticks, traveler cases, and jeweled pink ribbons.

Stella McCartney, the Rock n' Roll princess of British fashion,  teamed up with Saks Fifth Avenue stores to sell her unique "Key to the Cure" T-shirts.  The T-shirts were available for  purchase at Saks Fifth Avenue stores throughout October. Proceeds from the sale of the shirt will go toward breast cancer research.

Another designer that urged you to shop for the cure is Ralph Lauren. The Ralph Lauren Pink Pony Campaign aimed to draw attention to the lack of quality breast cancer care in many communities. One of the items from the campaign is the signature pink pony T-shirt, which sells for $65.00. Ten percent of the proceeds from the sale of the shirt benefit the Pink Pony Fund.

Also available for purchase this month is a new lip glaze compact from Stila cosmetics. The compact is a limited edition, containing four shimmer, pink lip glazes, specially created for the cause.

So what can you do to show your support without having to break open the piggy bank? Simply wearing pink ribbons with pride shows everyone that you are aware of the seriousness of breast cancer and in support of the search for the cure.

To do its part to show support of the pink ribbon cause, the campus organization Students in Fashion made and distributed hundreds of pink ribbon pins.
