Local
restaurants offer alternatives to fast food

Students
at Cal State Long Beach eat a lot of fast
food, but with so many great choices of
restaurants in Long Beach there really isn't
a need to engulf a 99-cent cheeseburger
everyday.
One
alternative to fast food is the family owned
Deli News, which offers students good food
at affordable prices because they have managed
to keep their prices the same since their
opening in 1990.
"This
is a good place to just hang out because
it is laid back," Maninder Gill, a
business major at CSULB said. "This
place has good prices and good food."
Owners
Rick and Racha D'Angelo provide Long Beach
locals with an East Coast Italian style
cuisine. Their motto of, serve-it-to-you-fast,
and affordable prices has lead to their
success as a restaurant.
"We
don't really advertise," Rick D'Angelo
said. "Most of our business is through
word of mouth and Boeing brings in a lot
of our customers."
Students
on a tight budget can find deals like a
14-inch medium pizza for $4.95, $1.99 daily
sandwich specials and most items range from
$2.95 to $4.95. The restaurant can be found
at Stearns and Bellflower in the Los Altos
shopping center.
Schooner
or Later is another good choice. The restaurant
is tucked away down by the marina, it has
a large patio seating area and offers great
food for its visitors. This first come first
serve, American style restaurant is a hidden
gem for families, students, boaters and
bikers alike.
"I
have been coming here about once a week
for about 20 years," Harvey Goodman,
a Long Beach businessman said. "I come
here for my business meetings to show people
from out of town the California experience
with great food and great atmosphere."
Denny
and Denise Lund are the owners of Schooner
or Later and in May they will have been
open for 20 years. Denise said they are
open everyday, except Christmas and Thanksgiving,
from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and untill 5:30
p.m. on weekends.
"We
aren't off a main access road so people
have to know we are here to come,"
Denise Lund, co-owner said. "This is
more of a destination spot."
The
price range at Schooner or Later is about
$7 to $13 a dish. To find this restaurant
drive along Marina Drive to 241 and it will
be on the right.
One
more place to go is Cha For Tea located
at 5720 E. Seventh St. just behind campus
in the Ralph's parking lot. It is a corporate
chain, but provides two great things for
students: A place to hold a group study
when the library is full and a healthier
choice of sustenance.
"We
cook our food in tea for its flavoring and
its healthier," Eric Dang, store manager
said. "We have over 50 varieties of
tea, which is the main portion of our menu."
Dang
said that even though the tea house is located
close to campus most of their business comes
from nearby residential areas. Students
usually come in the early mornings to study
before class or later after classes have
finished.
"Most
of the students don't want to walk here,
and if they drive they don't want to have
to go back to campus to look for a parking
spot," said Dang. "So most of
them come before or after classes."
