By Todd Leland
Summer On-line Forty-Niner
The Long Beach
State 49ers Women’s Volleyball team started practice last
week and are preparing to start their campaign to capture
a NCAA national championship.
Head coach Brian Gimmillaro leads the 49ers into what will
be his 18th season on the bench. Aiding him are assistant
coaches Debbie Green-Vargas, who has been with LBSU for 17
years, and recent full-time hire J.P. Calderon.
Leading the team will be seniors Tracy Bulquerin, Brittany
Hochevar, Lindsay Phillips, Elisha Thomas and Eva Tcholakova,
followed by juniors Jen Bowman and Raimi Mitchell. Sophomores
Kessie Doering, Erika Chidester and Kelsey Young will contribute,
while freshmen Melanie Fleig, Heather Laudato and Robin Miramontes
will push their upper-class teammates.
The 49ers, ranked No. 5 by the American Collegiate Volleyball
Association and No. 7 by Volleyball Magazine, open the season
on Aug. 30 and 31 when they host the Mizuno Invitational at
the Pyramid.
Prior to the team’s home opener at the invitational, fans
have an opportunity to see the athletes in the “2002 Sneak
Preview,” an open practice on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 4 p.m.
to 5 p.m.
The preview is free of charge and coach Gimmillaro will hold
a question and answer session after the practice. Fans will
be given the opportunity to purchase season tickets or mini
plans at the practice, as well as the chance to choose the
seats they wish to purchase.
