By Todd Leland
Summer On-line Forty-Niner
The 49er Athletic
Association has chosen six individuals to be the 2002 inductees
into Long Beach State’s Hall of Fame.
The 17th induction class will enshrine Todd Dillon, Tom Hoff,
Linda Lunceford-Sanders, Mike Mongomery, Jo Redmon and Francois
Wise.
Established in 1986, the Hall of Fame is already home to 148
49er athletes and coaches.
The festivities will begin Monday, Oct. 7 with the 16th Annual
Hall of Fame Golf Tournament, followed by an awards presentation.
The Hall Of Fame induction ceremony and dinner will be held
on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Long
Beach.
Dillon was a star quarterback at LBSU from 1982 to 1983, ranking
third all-time in career passing yards, as well as third all-time
in total offense. He led the 49ers to an 8-3 record in 1983.
Hoff played for the 49ers Men’s Volleyball team in 1995 and
1996, ranking seventh all-time on the 49er kill chart with
1,230. He tallied 751 kills in 1995 - the third highest single
season mark in 49er history.
Lunceford-Sanders was a four-year letter winner in softball
from 1991 to 1994 and competed on three College World Series
teams. She is the 49er all-time leader in hits and runs scored,
ranks third in batting average and holds fifth all-time in
RBIs.
Wise played four seasons at LBSU from 1976 to 1980. With the
49ers, he led the team in rebounding for three straight years.
Wise was also a three-time all-league team selection as well
as a three time all-tournament team selection.
Montgomery, head coach for the men’s basketball team at Stanford,
was a reserve guard for the LBSU basketball team in 1966 and
1968 and has coached at Stanford for the past 17 seasons,
leading the team to the NCAA tournament 10 times.
LBSU fencing coach Redmon established the fencing program
in 1964 and has led the team to 14 first place finishes at
the Intercollegiate Fencing Conference of Southern California
Championships. He was named United States Fencing Collegiate
Association’s Coach of the Year in 1993, and was given the
Lifetime Commitment to the Sport of Fencing Award in 2000.
