Frogs club services campus and community

By Adrienne Figueroa
Summer On-line Forty-Niner

Tucked away on the southern side of The Pyramid in an area unseen by the passersby on Atherton Street is an exercise facility that offers a variety of different services to Cal State Long Beach students and faculty, as well as other members of the local community.

Despite its seven-year tenure on campus, Frog’s Club One is an athletic club that not too many students may be aware exists. General manager Anthony Macaluso said that the company’s location plays a role.

“A lot of kids don’t park over here,” he said. “They’ll park in the upper campus so they don’t come by The Pyramid.”

Furthermore, the university prohibits advertising for the facility on campus, so Frog’s is unable to distribute signs indicating its whereabouts, he added. Only recently was a sign approved for placement in view of Atherton Street.

In spite of its obscurity, the club serves a large group of individuals in the area.

“We have a huge diverse crowd from the community,” Macaluso said.

This diversity is due in part to the melange of services the facility offers. For example, Frog’s wellness program, jointly operated through the school’s kinesiology department, specifically deals with those who have or have had strokes, osteoporosis, heart disease and other debilitating conditions. Individuals who may have undergone a hip replacement can seek physical therapy through the service as well as more one-on-one time with a trainer, said membership representative and personal trainer Linda Leipper.

The program is just one of several factors that contributes to the club’s uniqueness, setting it apart from local gyms, Leipper added.

“Our environment is just a little bit less intimidating,” she said.

Furthermore, the club offers special seasonal courses available only in the summertime, including kayaking at Seal Beach and rock climbing at Leipper’s own rock climbing gym. These services are provided in addition to the regular, all-season classes like yoga, spinning, step, pilates and kickboxing.

“I like the atmosphere, the surroundings, the people…and the TVs,” she said with a laugh.
