Former
49er Water Polo Players Gain Fame

Former 49er Men’s
Water Polo players were inducted into the Water Polo Hall
of Fame earlier this week showing off the talent that comes
from Long Beach State.
Three Long Beach State were inducted into the Water Polo Hall
of Fame, Bill Barnett, Ken Hamdorf and Doug Kimball.
Barnett, who played for Long Beach State in the mid 1960’s
went on to become a coach at Newport High School for 24 years.
As coach, be brought the water polo team at Newport High to
win 10 championships and seven runner-ups.
Hamford played for Long Beach State during the 1961 and 1962
seasons, earning “49er of the Year.” Harndorf coached from
1962 to 1965 at Westminster High School, from 1966 to 1976
he coached at Lakewood and in 1976 he coached at Wilson.
He moved from high schools in 1977, when he received his current
position at Golden West College. At Golden West,
Handorf has won 11 conference championships, seven SoCal Championships
and nine state titles. Over his 25 years of coaching
he has compiled a 425-46-2 record, developing 47 All-Americans.
In 1981, Kimball became a part of the first team All-American
for LBSU and two-time first team all-conference selection.
Kimball spent 15 years on the olympic national team from 1980
to 1995.
