First
time visit to L.A. leaves Boston behind
By Maritza Diaz
Summer Forty Niner
Over 46,000 people
came to watch the opening game between the Los Angeles Dodgers
and the Boston Red Sox at Dodger Stadium on June 21. The three
game series resulted in the Dodgers sweeping the Red Sox,
and placing Los Angeles in first place in the NL West.
This game was Boston’s first time playing at Dodger Stadium
and the first time the two teams have met since 1916, according
to articles in MLB.com.
Fans of both teams came out to support their respective home
team on the first game of the series. The seats seemed to
be a sea of white and blue. Upon a closer look, however specs
of red could be seen scattered throughout the stadium. Red
Sox fans did not let their team go unsupported.
“Boston’s number one!” chanted small pockets of Boston fans
who were seated in various sections of the outer reserve near
third base.
Even though they were outnumbered, many Boston fans showed
their support by wearing jerseys, hats, or shirts with the
Red Sox logo.
Dodgers fans responded with shouts of, “GO HOME!” and “Boston
Sucks!”
In the third inning, while the teams were changing positions,
an unidentified man jumped on to right field and ran to the
other side. The crowed cheered as he made his way across the
field. Security chased the man and tackled him to the ground.
He was handcuffed and removed from the field as the crowd
roared with laughter. Security personnel couldn’t comment
on who the man was or if he was caught.
The game was stopped three times when beach balls that are
tossed between fans made their way on to the field. They were
confiscated by security.
The Dodgers went on to win the first game with a score of
3-2. Boston’s Shea Hillenbrand hit two homeruns that invoked
cheers from Boston fans, but were easily drowned out by sounds
of disappointment by Dodgers fans. Los Angeles’ Adrian Beltre
hit a homerun early in the game, then later Dave Roberts hit
a two run double.
The next two games belonged to the Dodgers. They beat Boston
with scores of 5-4 on June 22, and 9-6 on June 23. The loss
of all three games pushed Boston out of first place in the
NL East.
The two teams are not scheduled to meet again in the regular
season. Unless they both make it to the World Series, fans
might have to wait another 86 years to see the two teams play
each other again.
