Alvarez
snags spot for Team USA
By Joe Licavoli
Summer On-line Forty-Niner
Long Beach State
LHP Abe Alvarez was the third straight Dirtbag to win a spot
on this year’s Summer National Team.
Alvarez followed in the footsteps of his teammates Jeremy
Reed in summer 2001 and Bobby Crosby in the summer of 2002
with his spot on the team.
Alvarez had a great sophomore campaign going 12-3 with a 2.72
ERA earning him second team All-American status as well as
winning him the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Year. Alvarez
secured his spot in the team, pitching 4.0 innings, giving
up one run on five hits, walking one and striking out six
in the team’s first exhibition game.
Just like Alvarez, both Reed and Crosby were named to the
team following their sophomore seasons. Reed used their success
with Team USA in the MLB Amateur Draft the following year.
This may be something that will be beneficial to Alvarez’s
career, as Reed and Crosby achieved success after playing
for Team USA. Reed was a round pick earlier this month going
to the White Sox and Crosby was a first round selection in
the 2001 season.
Team USA will play 30 games this summer, including 17 on the
domestic side of the Red, White and Blue Summer Tour.
