No
rain expected to fall on Lakers parade

For the past two
years, Figueroa St. in downtown Los Angeles has shut down
to make way for the Lakers Championship Parade. With the Lakers
leading in the finals, this year may be no exception.
Fans are no doubt expecting a grand celebration just like
years past. However, until the Lakers actually win the series,
a parade is premature.
"At the moment we have no parade scheduled. If the Lakers
win on Wednesday, then we'll have more information,"
said Michael Roth, Director of Communications at the Staples
Center.
A parade is typically planned two or three days after the
last championship game is played, and until the outcome of
that game is known, there's no parade planned, said Roth.
However, if there is a parade, the route will most likely
be very similar to last years.
The 2001 Lakers parade began at the Department of Water and
Power Building with team members riding in busses down Figueroa
St. and ending at the Staples Center, as indicated in a map
posted in dailynews.com.
About 550,000 people attended last year's parade, according
to an article in the NBA's official website. If the Lakers
sweep the New Jersey Nets on Wednesday, those fans will probably
get a chance to show their support for their home team on
Friday, according to Susan Hicks, Senior Traffic Supervisor
at the Los Angeles Department of Transportation.
"If the Lakers win on Wednesday, there will definitely
be a parade," she said.
Supervisors at the Departments of Transportation were in meetings
on Tuesday discussing the planning of a possible parade, such
as handling traffic and road closures, Hicks said.
The organizing of the parade, including security is up to
the Lakers, according to an e-mail from the Los Angeles Police
Department.
The Lakers emerged as the Western Conference champions for
the third straight year by beating the Sacramento Kings. The
Nets came out of nowhere and surprised everyone by winning
the Eastern Conference against the Boston Celtics.
The Lakers have won the last three games of the championship
finals. Unless the Nets win the next four games, Los Angeles
gets another parade.
