By Joe Licavoli
Summer On-line Forty-Niner

Long Beach State outfielder Jeremy Reed was drafted in the second round of Major League Baseball's Amateur Draft by the Chicago White Sox Tuesday.

Reed, a junior, was the first of six Dirtbags drafted and he was the 59th pick overall.

Also drafted was first baseman, Paul McAnulty in the 12th round to the San Diego Padres. In the 13th round, junior shortstop Kevin Randel went to the Florida Marlins and senior outfielder, Nick Covarrubias went to the Houston Astros.

The first pitcher drafted from the Dirtbags was senior right hander Chris Demaria, who went in the 17th round to the Pirates. Senior, RHP Josh Alliston went to the Milwaukee Brewers in the 21st round.

Reed is the ninth Dirtbag drafter in the first or second round since 1989 and the 10th ever Dirtbag drafted in the first or second round. The White Sox already have two Dirtbags in their franchise, Jeff Liefler and Rocky Biddle.

In his three seasons with LBSU, Reed batted .326 with 135 runs, 110 RBIs and 54 steals. Reed was a first team All Big West Pick in 2001, batting .
339, with 56 runs and 19 steals, a team best.

McAnulty had nine homeruns and 55 RBIs with a .610 slugging percentage, leading the Dirtbags in his only season with LBSU. Randel had eight homeruns and 54 runs. Covarrubias led LBSU with 56 runs and 51 RBIs.

Demaria had a 2.42 ERA with five saves as a senior and had a 7-4 record with a 2.73 ERA and a .216 opponent batting average in his two seasons with the Dirtbags. Alliston had 26 saves, earning him second team All Big West honors in 2000.

The draft wrapped up on June 5.
