Sox take Reed in 2nd round of draft

Long Beach State
outfielder Jeremy Reed was drafted in the second round of
Major League Baseball's Amateur Draft by the Chicago White
Sox Tuesday.
Reed, a junior,
was the first of six Dirtbags drafted and he was the 59th
pick overall.
Also drafted was
first baseman, Paul McAnulty in the 12th round to the San
Diego Padres. In the 13th round, junior shortstop Kevin Randel
went to the Florida Marlins and senior outfielder, Nick Covarrubias
went to the Houston Astros.
The first pitcher
drafted from the Dirtbags was senior right hander Chris Demaria,
who went in the 17th round to the Pirates. Senior, RHP Josh
Alliston went to the Milwaukee Brewers in the 21st round.
Reed is the ninth
Dirtbag drafter in the first or second round since 1989 and
the 10th ever Dirtbag drafted in the first or second round.
The White Sox already have two Dirtbags in their franchise,
Jeff Liefler and Rocky Biddle.
In his three seasons
with LBSU, Reed batted .326 with 135 runs, 110 RBIs and 54
steals. Reed was a first team All Big West Pick in 2001, batting
.
339, with 56 runs and 19 steals, a team best.
McAnulty had nine
homeruns and 55 RBIs with a .610 slugging percentage, leading
the Dirtbags in his only season with LBSU. Randel had eight
homeruns and 54 runs. Covarrubias led LBSU with 56 runs and
51 RBIs.
Demaria had a 2.42
ERA with five saves as a senior and had a 7-4 record with
a 2.73 ERA and a .216 opponent batting average in his two
seasons with the Dirtbags. Alliston had 26 saves, earning
him second team All Big West honors in 2000.
The draft wrapped
up on June 5.
