Dirtbags win 2 at NCAA Regionals

The Long Beach State Dirtbags won two out of four games at the NCAA Regional tournament hosted by Stanford University in Palo Alto last weekend.

The Dirtbags defeated San Jose State 6-3, Friday. Jeremy Reed and Paul McAnulty drove in 2 runs each, while Kevin Randel and Nick Orlandos both had one run for Long Beach State. San Jose State had three homeruns from Gabe Lopez, Hector Zamora and Bryan Baker.

Saturday, LBSU suffered a loss to Stanford 5-4. Paul McAnulty led the team with two runs for Long Beach State, while Nick Covarrubias and Chris Genung had one run each. Chris Riordan, Carlos Quentin, Scott Dragicevich, Brian Hall and Andy Topham had one run each, making the total score for Stanford.

Jeremy Reed pounded out a two-run homerun, adding to a 4-0 win for the Dirtbags over Cal State Fullerton on Saturday. Kevin Randel and Tim Butting also had two runs.'

The Dirtbags ended the tournament with a 4-8 loss to Stanford in the championship game at Sunken Diamond on Sunday. Kevin Randel, Tim Hutting, Nick Covarrubias and Brad Davis each had one run for Long Beach State. Carlos Quentin belted out two runs for Stanford, while Chris Carter, Sam Fuld, Ryan Carko, Jason Cooper, Chris O'Riordan and Scott Dragicevich each had one run.

Long Beach State ended the season with a 39-21 record. It was the eighth time since 1989 that the team had at least 39 wins.
