Cal State Long
Beach played host to over 1700 athletes last weekend for the
Special Olympics Summer Games. The games were officially opened
on Friday by 1960 Olympic Gold medal decathlete Rafer Johnson.
A torch carrying the “Flame of Hope” was brought to CSULB
over 1,500 miles across Southern California through the efforts
of more than 3,800 law enforcement personnel.
Events were held in a wide range of categories, including
aquatics, tennis, gymnastics, basketball, bocce, golf and
track and field. The spirits of sportsmanship and companionship
were strong among the athletes. Competition, though important
to the games, was not as important as each participant doing
his or her best. No matter where an athlete placed in any
given event, everyone came away a winner.
