Potential
impact of dorm room changes
I was surprised and disturbed to see a quote by me in the
June 6 article, “Interior Face-lift Begins in Dorms”. I have
known this reporter to do a very good job in the past. Her
very hurried assignment this time was to attempt to solicit
a professional opinion from me as to what the effects might
be on student “stress” when making suite space smaller.
I made it very clear that I had no data on this. So we spoke
in general terms on issues of the overall impact of campus
environments, on college student experience, including stress
(so-called “Campus Ecology), and I referred her to some publications
in the area of campus ecology since she seemed quite interested.
My quote regarding the “potential for anything happening,
like unhappiness” was taken very seriously out-of-context,
and made it appear that I believed that the controversial
remodeling would lead to a negative psychological consequence.
I make no such claim and I tried to make it clear over and
over to the reporter that I had no data or information on
the relationship between space size and stress.
