A.S.I.
conducts business now all year long
By Rachelle Youngman
Summer On-line Forty-Niner
Associated Students
Inc. is open and active during the summer for the first time
in Cal State Long Beach history.
A.S.I. is an organization
that every student becomes part of when he or she pays tuition
fees. It funds and maintains campus services and programs
such as student government, the University Student Union and
the campus Recycling Center.
Until this summer,
A.S.I. only operated during the fall and spring semesters.
However, because CSULB now recognizes summer sessions as a
regular semester, a portion of the student’s tuition fees
goes to A.S.I. In return, A.S.I. must remain open, operate
campus events and hold weekly meetings during the summer,
as they would regularly during any other semester.
“We have to now
provide students with services that we have not had to in
the past,” said A.S.I. administrator Gina Garcia.
Clubs and organizations
now have the opportunity to apply for and receive money for
their causes during the summer instead of having to wait until
September.
Furthermore, weekly
senate meetings, which were previously not held during summer,
are now held every Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in USU-217.
At the beginning of each meeting, all students are welcome
to present any concerns or ideas they have during the student
opinion period.
The people elected
for the fall 2002 semester are responsible for operating A.S.I.
during the summer. Their positions officially begin
June 1.
“Everything has
been moved up,” Garcia said. “Instead of starting in
September we start in June. There is not much of a transition
period. We have had to become more efficient.”
A.S.I. vice president
Shahrokh Sheik views the year-round change as very beneficial,
as A.S.I. officials are able to use the summer session to
become familiar with their jobs and duties before fall semester
begins.
