L.B. celebrates the 4th

By Heather Clarke
Summer On-line Forty-Niner

This Fourth of July weekend Long Beach is offering fireworks and festivities to celebrate our countries independence.

The First Annual Long Beach Live is kicking off on July 5 and lasts until July 7 from noon until 11 p.m. It will be three and a half acres of music, vendors, street performers and carnival rides. The event costs $6 per day for adults and $3 for children. Dollar off coupons are available online at downtownlongbeach.org.

The event stretches from Pine Avenue to Long Beach Boulevard and from Long Beach Boulevard to Linden Avenue. Broadway and the Promenade will be closed for the event. The Blue Cafe will be open with no cover charge along with other participating restaurants The Madison and Rock Bottom Brewery.

The Downtown Long Beach Association is organizing the event as part of their goal to attract people to Long Beach said Darcy Driscoll, marketing manager for the Downtown Long Beach Association.

Driscoll said they are hoping to draw about 25,000 people. The event will be open from 5 p.m. until midnight Friday, noon until midnight Saturday, and noon until 9 p.m. Sunday.

The theme for the 44th annual fireworks show, put on by the Long Beach Fire Department, is “Spirit of America.”

The show will take place at the usual spot in the Long Beach Veteran’s Stadium on Clark Avenue. Tickets for the show are being sold at Fire Station 19 at 3559 Clark Ave. from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. through the Fourth. The tickets cost $12 for adults 12 and older, $6 for seniors and children 11 and under, and children 5 and younger are free.

There will be a pre-show at 5:30 p.m. which includes music, a demonstration by the Long Beach Police Departments K9 Unit, clowns and drawings.

The Queen Mary is also holding its Annual July 4th Extravaganza from July 4 through 7. There will be a carnival in the Queen Mary Events Park as well as a fireworks show co-sponsored by the City of Long Beach.

Tickets for the Queen Mary event cost $19 for adults, $17 for seniors and $15 for children.
